Using the aggregate index, we find evidence that institutional quality is positively linked to growth. We investigate the growth effects of institutional quality and instability, using the political risk index from the ICRG in a cross-country study of 132 countries, measuring instability as the coefficient of variation. But to improve institutional quality, a country must endure a period of institutional change, which implies at least a little and possibly a lot of institutional instability. Our study brings into question the efficacy and economic sense of local market short-sale restrictions for stocks that trade globally.īoth institutional quality and institutional stability have been argued to stimulate economic growth. Further, ADR short sellers are able to predict negative returns regardless of the severity of the home-market short-sale constraints and that return predictability of ADR short sellers is greater for ADRs of foreign stocks with binding home-market constraints. We also find that when short sellers trade these short-sale restricted ADRs, they behave in a contrarian manner consistent with them being able to exploit and profit from private information. short sellers more heavily trade ADRs from markets where short selling is prohibited than from markets where short selling is allowed. We focus on the case of ADRs traded in the U.S., as in some cases, the home markets of these ADRs prohibit short selling. We examine the effect of home market short-sale constraints on stocks that also trade in other countries that have more liberal short-sale rules. Consequently, the study recommends an electoral reform which prioritises a six-year single tenure system in Nigeria. Thus, while the economic base of the metropolitan states and the local elite are expanding, the citizens are at the receiving end of this unfair arrangement. It diverts huge public spending from human and capital development to the procurement of election logistical materials usually sourced from the industrialised states. Using the Marxist Instrumentalist framework of analysis, documentary data and content analysis, this study argues that the electoral timetable of a four-year fixed-term of office for elected officers only serves the economic interests of the local bourgeoisies and their foreign collaborators. This study therefore provides an empirical analysis of how election cost in Nigeria’s fourth republic undermines expected development returns. While comparative studies on these relationships in both established and fledgling democracies have produced differential results, the link between electoral cost and economic development in transitional states is under-studied. The popular thinking in western scholarship projects progressive deepening of liberal democratic principles and praxis as the panacea for economic prosperity in the peripheral socio-economic formation. Particularly, there is a threshold level of democracy, estimated at 5, beyond which more democracy enhances the financial sector development and below which democracy hinders the development of the financial system. Hence, there are two extreme regimes where democracy’s impact on the financial system is different depending on the democracy level. Furthermore, results demonstrate that the level of democracy and financial system development are correlated in a U-shaped manner. Findings confirm the fact that the relationship between democracy and financial development is indeed non-linear. We use a sample of 90 developing countries over the period 1984–2007 and rely on panel smooth threshold regression, fixed effects, and system GMM models. This paper tries to bring new insights into this debate by examining non-linearities by the way of a new method of analysis, i.e., a panel smooth transition regression model. Part of the literature explains theses controversies by assuming that democracy’s effect on development is non-linear. There is evidence for mixed effects of democracy on the development of the financial sector.

Yes, i have made a few reviews and it takes a lot of time : unpacking the kit or AM resin set, taking a lot of pictures, sorting them to keep the best ones, writing the review, linking the pictures to the corresponding text. While we do receive review samples from some manufacturers and vendors, that doesn't nearly keep up with the frequency and volume of releases, so we're back to square one there.Īs for myself, when I used to do a kit review, it was to show the finished product-a complete build with a couple of build-up steps, and I would get a check in the mail.Īlthough, for the reasons I explain above, I am attracted to this subject, I think I would find I would find photographing and describing a complete detailed unbuilt kit review so tedious and time-consuming that I would lose my interest in the build itself. What to do if Microsoft Edge isn't working If we download the data for the City of Edinburgh Local Authority we get the data for all 549 datazones in Sheet 2. The spreadsheet is in Microsoft Excel format (.xlsx) but can also be opened in other programs such as ’s free Calc program (go to to download). Ī spreadsheet will download, containing information about the dataset (‘Sheet 0’), Abbreviations and definitions (‘Sheet 1’), the data (‘Sheet 2’), and descriptions of the data columns (‘Sheet 3’).Select ‘Whole of Scotland’ or ‘Selected Local Authorities’ or ‘Selected Scottish Parliamentary Constituencies’.Click on ‘DATA DOWNLOAD’ and enter your contact information (used by us confidentially to find out how the data are being used). The map is useful for looking at the stats for a single neighbourhood (datazone S01002070 in this case, as shown in the text box) and seeing the general patterns of outlet density, health and deprivation in the surrounding area, but what if you want to look at the data in greater depth, for example to find out how that neighbourhood ranks against others? To do this you can download the data for the area of interest, or the whole of Scotland: you’ll need to scroll down to see all the information in the text box) The map and text box should look like this after following the steps above: (N.B. It is not the number of outlets within each datazone – such a measure wouldn’t be comparable between neighbourhoods because they differ in size so widely, and would also be artificially constrained by the neighbourhood boundaries in a way that residents aren’t in real life. Outlet availability is measured as density (per km 2) within a 10-minute walk (800 m) of the neighbourhood’s population centre. When a neighbourhood has been highlighted yellow on the map (by clicking) a text box will appear under the map to give more information about the neighbourhood, and how it compares with the rest of the Local Authority and Scotland on each of the measures (see image below for what it should look like). To look at how this changes when the neighbourhood is compared to the rest of the Local Authority (rather than the rest of Scotland), click the ‘LA average button’ and do the search again. The red shading shows that this neighbourhood is among the highest in Scotland for all alcohol outlets, off-sales alcohol outlets, on-sales alcohol outlets, tobacco outlets, and alcohol-related deaths, but the light blue shading shows that it has lung cancer/lung disease death rates and deprivation levels below the Scottish average. You’ll notice that the colour key for the map ranges from dark blue for the lowest values, to deep red for the highest values. Choose between the different data layers (using round buttons on right side of the map). When you find it click on postcode EH8 9QW on the map – this will highlight (in yellow) the neighbourhood that the postcode is in.Zoom in to highest zoom level (click the button) to see the postcode layer.Type the postcode into the search box, then press enter or click on ‘find’.Select ‘Scottish average’ rather than ‘LA average’, on the left of the map.We will begin by comparing this neighbourhood to the Scottish average. For this example we’ll look at what the webmap can tell us about an Edinburgh neighbourhood – one that contains the postcode EH8 9QW. You can pan around the map and zoom in and out to different areas, or use the search box to search by street, place name or postcode. The different layers are described in more detail at. all alcohol outlets, tobacco outlets or alcohol-related deaths). You can use the map legend panel on the right to select which neighbourhood measure you want to see on the map (e.g. For example – in ‘Scottish average’ mode we see that the highest densities of alcohol outlets (shaded red) are confined to the main cities and towns, but when compared against the ‘Local Authority average’ we find that some smaller localities are highlighted too, particularly in councils with outlet densities lower than those in Edinburgh or Glasgow. You can choose whether the map shading shows how each neighbourhood compares with the Scottish average or the average for the specific local authority that the neighbourhood is within. You’ll see some instructions to the left of the map – how to turn layers on/off, zoom, search, find out more about a neighbourhood, go fullscreen, find out about the underlying data, and download the data. Then click on the link or map to go to the webmap. Try using a newer browser – such as the free Google Chrome browser that you can download from

One thing which I found quite special is that the renderman batch process saves everything in its own directory. Even if this is a more efficient apporach because it avoids the overhead of Maya to Renderman translation and no Maya has to be open during rendering, I prefer one batch process which can be easily controlled. Then the prman batch rendering starts with it's own window. If you do batchrendering, rib files are exported for the whole sequence in one go as soon as you start the rendering or in batch if you change the settings. To create nice caustics, I can use VCM integrator what is a bidirectional pathtracer which is able to do nice refractive and reflective caustics, I'll add a test as soon as possible. I used the pathtracer integrator because I wanted to compare better with Arnold and others. Shading an lighting work as expected and I was able to shade my scene quite fast, well it is not really complex so no wonder it works nicely. I'd prefer to have one light where I can set the shape. They are the same the only difference is the shape. You can create disk, rect, spherical and other lights. The previous problem that Renderman light locators were not visible in the Viewport2.0 is gone. Now the REYES mode is completely gone what simplifies rendering a lot. To test the breaking bottle scene, I used the brandnew Renderman 21 with Maya2017. I could fix this problem and repored it in the Renderman forum where they tested it and are fixing it, that's great. As soon as you try it, it is swiched back to Renderman. Once you switch to Renderman in the RenderGlobals windows, you can never switch back. Camera imperfections are introduced like lense distortion, vignetting, chromatic aberration to make the image less perfect.ĭuring the creation of the TestRenderProject, I discovered a small Maya plugin problem. Renderman now has a better hair marshner based hair shader. It was intially developed by Disney and was used in Big Hero 6 even if this movie was rendered with Disneys own inhouse renderer Hyperion. With version 20 Pixar introduced a Denoiser. And a lot of other smaller new things have been added. This simplifies the workflow because the user has to deal with less parameters. It seems that they drop REYES now and concentrate on the pathtracer RIS. New and improved procedural textures are available. Lighting system has been rewritten to fit better into modern hardware. Renderman now ships with the same production shaders which are used by Pixar itself to create their outstanding movies. And Renderman supports OSL now, what is a great thing even if it seems that it cannot yet be used for surface shaders, but texture patterns only. They are making huge steps with the 22 release. Emissive volumes can now be used as lightsource what greatly improves sampling in scenes with fire. Guided by machine learning the lighting results should be improved. An new interesting approach is a Light Learning scheme. NVIDIA's optix denoiser made it's way into Renderman. And as well as in other renderers, adaptive sampling is coming back. Maya and Katana plugins are new designed to reflect the new workflows. Same with hair, the new curve rendering procudures let you work interactively. Let Renderman render in the viewport while you are modelling or shading, or lighting, very fine. It removes noise from an image without loosing detail information. And of course because it is a path tracer, it trends to produce noise which leads to Pixars Denoise tool. Following the common trend to pathtracing, Pixar implemented RIS a path tracer (and bi directional path tracer) for interactive work and final renderings. This is a fully functional version, no limits, only in a way you are not allowed to use it commercially. It was calm after newer renderers like mentalray, vray and arnold appeared. Reflections were faked with mapping or with other tricks. Rendeman itself worked a long time without raytracing at all. This worked fine as long as there was no need for raytracing. With this technology only the parts visible in currently rendered buckets had to stay in memory. So for any bucket, the geometry is subdivided into subpatches which then are shaded. Since in the early days the memory was quite expensive and computers had to deal with a tiny amount of ram (compared to nowadays computers), the basic algorithm was based on the principle to create data only if necessary and throw it away as soon as possible. Later it was used for VFX in features movies and finally for full CG movies like Toy Story. Then Pixar used it to first develop shots like "Knick Knack" or "Wally B". First it was developed in the 1970s by Ed Catmull and others. It was here first, and it will stay if all others are gone.
